You must resolve to commit to it, tell yourself that you don’t like the old habits, your old way of doing things and you want to start behaving and acting in a new way.  You won’t achieve your personal development goals overnight, so don’t try to. Understand and realize that you’re going to have to take small steps to get there and start taking them. Appreciate what you already have and work on the skills you need in order to gain more, decide on alternative ways of handling situations and other people, something that’s different from the bad habits you used before.

Once you make the commitment, stick to it. Repeating the new behavior every day will make this new way of acting a part of you and soon you won’t want to abandon this “new you”.
